Polyimide double-sided tape

Double-sided polyimide tape is a high-temperature resistant tape made of polyimide film as the base material and coated with high-performance adhesive on both sides. It has excellent temperature resistance (typically -269℃ to 260℃), electrical insulation and chemical stability, and is suitable for scenarios such as fixing electronic components and shielding in high-temperature environments.

Production Process Flow

From raw materials to finished product, every step is rigorously controlled to ensure consistent and reliable performance.

Select PI substrate (25-125μm), suitable adhesives (silicone/acrylic), and release materials. Test key indicators such as thickness, viscosity, and cleanliness, and reject substandard raw materials.

After dust removal and degreasing cleaning, improve adhesion through corona/plasma activation or primer treatment, then dry at 80-120℃ to remove moisture and residual solvents.
Mix resin, curing agent, and other components according to the formula, grind to a particle size ≤5μm, adjust viscosity to 1000-5000mPa・s, and degas under vacuum before use.
Apply two layers of adhesive in stages (thickness 10-50μm, tolerance ±2μm). After each coating, pre-cur at 60-150℃ in stages, compact with release material, and finally cure at 150-200℃ for 2-4 hours. Some adhesives require curing at 23±2℃ and 50±5% humidity for 24-72 hours.
Inspect the master roll and remove defective parts. Precisely slit to the specified width (tolerance ±0.1mm). Randomly inspect dimensions, peel strength, high-temperature resistance, and other indicators.
Use moisture-proof and dust-proof packaging (partial vacuum packaging) and store in an environment of 15-30℃ and humidity ≤60%

The core characteristics of double-sided polyimide tape revolve around “high temperature resistance, strong adhesion, and high stability,” as follows:

1. Extreme Temperature Resistance: Long-term operating temperature range is -269℃ to 260℃, able to withstand the thermal stress of industrial processes such as high-temperature welding and reflow soldering, and can withstand even higher temperature shocks for short periods.

2. Uniform and Strong Adhesion on Both Sides: The silicone or acrylic adhesive coating on both sides provides stable and uniform adhesion, allowing for tight bonding to precision parts and irregular surfaces, preventing edge lifting or detachment after bonding.

3. Excellent Overall Stability: Strong electrical insulation and high dielectric strength, suitable for insulation requirements in the electronics field.

Resistant to chemical corrosion, able to withstand harsh environments such as acids, alkalis, and solvents without degradation.

Excellent mechanical strength; the substrate is not easily torn or deformed, suitable for complex working conditions.

4. Easy Cleaning and Removal: Almost no adhesive residue remains after removal, preventing contamination of bonded parts and reducing subsequent cleaning processes.

The commonly used materials for double-sided polyimide tapes are mainly divided into two categories: substrate and adhesive. The choice of core material directly determines its performance:

1. Core Substrate: Polyimide (PI) Film Commonly known as Kapton®, it forms the basic framework of the tape, possessing extreme temperature resistance (-269℃ to 260℃), high electrical insulation, and excellent mechanical strength.

Film thickness is typically 25μm, 50μm, etc., selectable according to bonding strength and insulation requirements. It is lightweight and not easily deformed.

2. Commonly Used Adhesives

Silicone-based adhesives: Offer stronger temperature resistance (compatible with the entire temperature range of the substrate), gentle adhesion, and aging resistance. Leaves no residue after removal, making them the mainstream choice in the electronics industry.

Acrylic-based adhesives: Provide higher bonding strength, are relatively affordable, and have a slightly narrower temperature range (typically -40℃ to 180℃), suitable for industrial applications requiring high adhesion.

Double-sided polyimide tape is primarily used in high-temperature, precision, and high-reliability applications, mainly in electronics manufacturing, high-end industry, and industrial connections:

1. Electronics Manufacturing (Core Applications)

PCB Board Processing: Fixing electronic components; shielding and protecting precision parts during high-temperature soldering/reflow soldering to prevent solder contamination.

Chip and Semiconductor: Bonding and fixing during chip packaging; temporary fixing during wafer dicing; withstands high process temperatures.

Electronic Components: LED chip bonding; battery tab fixing; sensor assembly; provides both bonding and insulation.

2. High-End Industrial Applications

Aerospace: Bonding components for airborne electronic equipment; insulating and sealing high-temperature areas around engines; adaptable to extreme temperature variations.

Automotive Electronics: Fixing battery pack components in new energy vehicles; bonding electronic components in engine compartments; withstands high temperatures and vibration.

Medical Equipment: Fixing components in high-temperature sterilization environments (e.g., internal components of medical instruments); meets biocompatibility requirements.

3. Industrial Connection Applications
Suitable for connecting/splicing materials such as films, fabrics, and metal foils under high-temperature conditions, such as lithium battery electrode connections and temporary bonding and fixing in high-temperature film production lines.

During the connection process, it can withstand the high-temperature environment of subsequent processing while maintaining adhesive strength, without affecting the continuous production of materials.

4. Other Special Scenarios
Industrial Coating: Local masking in high-temperature spraying and powder coating processes; removal leaves no residue and does not affect the coating effect.

Precision Instruments: Bonding and insulation of internal components in optical instruments and electronic meters; space-saving and stable.

Our company mainly provides the DS10K model of double-sided polyimide tape, with a thickness of up to 0.1mm. It uses a silicone system and can be used without residue in a high-temperature environment of 260 degrees Celsius for 0.5 hours.
