Basalt Tapes
Basalt tape, also known as lava wrap, is a heat resistant tape used to wrap exhaust pipes and more. Basalt lava tape improves thermal performance and reliability. Insulated pipes improve performance with any machinery. Losses due to heat can add up to a good percentage of the total efficiency and reducing that loss will make your machines run smoother, longer.
Made from continuous filament basalt (volcanic rock). Basalt fiber tape is made from basalt roving or textured fiber and can be woven to varying thicknesses and weaves. Basalt tape (lava wrap) is non combustible and fire resistant. Maintaining its integrity at temperatures up to 1800°F/982°C basalt is safe, inert, non-respirable, chemical resistant, acid resistant and water resistant.
Features
Basalt tape lava wrap is the best product for your pipe wrap needs. It is more durable than glass fiber and carbon fiber wraps. Helps maintain heat in your exhaust while increasing power and reducing heat damage. Use with stainless steel locking ties.
1. Superior Thermal Performance
- Extreme Heat Resistance: Basalt fiber withstands higher continuous operatingtemperatures (often up to 750°℃’ or 1382°F) and higher peak temperatures (up to1095°C or 2000°F)than standard E-glass fiberglass wraps.
- Maximum Heat Containment: As an exhaust wrap, basalt’s excellent insulation properties keep exhaust gases hotter for longer. This increases gas velocity, which improves exhaust scavenging and contributes to better engine horsepower and efficiency.
- Reduced Under-Hood Temperature: By effectively containing heat within the exhaust, basalt tapes drastically lower radiant heat in the engine bay (often by as much as 50-70% ), protecting adjacent components like hoses, wiring, and fluid lines.
2. Enhanced Durability and Safety
- Higher Strength: Basalt fiber has a higher tensile strength and impact resistance than fiberglass, making the wrap more durable and resistant to vibration and abrasion in high-stress environments (like engine bays and racing).
- Chemical Resistance: Basalt is highly resistant to acids, alkalis, oils, and chemical spills, which ensures the wrap maintains its integrity and insulation performance even when exposed to automotive fluids.
- Non-Toxic and Safe: Basalt fiber is naturally inert, non-respirable, and asbestos-free. It is a safer material for installers and is more environmentally friendly than many other synthetic fiber wraps.
3. Application and Aesthetics
- Flexibility and Pliability: Basalt wraps are often more flexible and pliable than fiberglass, allowing for an easier, tighter, and more secure installation around complex bends and headers, often without the need for pre-wetting.
- Aesthetic Appeal: Basalt typically has a rich, dark, natural color (often described as “titanium” or “carbon fiber look”) that resists discoloration and provides a premium, clean aesthetic without requiring a silicone sealant coating for color retention.
Applications
Automotive and Motorsport Performance
Basalt tape is most famously used as a high-performance exhaust wrap to maximize engine efficiency and protect surrounding areas from heat damage.
- Turbocharged Engine Headers: Used to wrap the exhaust manifolds and headers on turbocharged engines. Containing heat here ensures the turbocharger spools faster and reduces the thermal load on the turbo components.
- Performance Exhaust Systems: Applied to high-output or racing vehicle exhausts to maximize exhaust gas velocity (improving scavenging and horsepower) and to significantly reduce radiant heat that could damage expensive bodywork or composite parts.
- Under-Hood Protection: Insulating exhaust pipes that run close to sensitive parts like plastic intake manifolds, wiring harnesses, or fluid reservoirs to prevent heat soak and early component failure.
- Motorcycles and ATVs: Wrapping exposed exhaust pipes to reduce the heat felt by the rider/passenger and protect against accidental burns.

Basalt Tape Specifications
The basalt tape, with or without adhesive, is made entirely of 12-13 micron basat yarns that resist temperaturesfrom -260°C up to +700°C. Upon request, the tape is available with an adjustable adhesive side.
